If the LinkedIn Message Sender Phantom returns a "Missing Send button (or Premium account needed)" error, it means LinkedIn doesn't show a Send button on the target profile. You can only message someone directly on LinkedIn if they're a 1st-degree connection or if they have the Open Profile feature enabled. To fix it, connect with the person first, or switch to the Sales Navigator Message Sender if you're working in Sales Navigator.

If your connection requests aren't going through, see How to Fix LinkedIn Connection Requests Not Being Sent. If the profile is out of your network entirely, see How to Fix the "Profile Out Of Network" Error.

Why you're seeing this

This error appears when the "Send" button isn't available on the profile you're trying to message. LinkedIn only shows the button if:

  • The person is a 1st-degree connection
  • They're a Premium member with the "Open Profile" feature enabled (anyone can message them for free)

It can also appear if you're trying to send a message in Sales Navigator using the regular LinkedIn Message Sender Phantom instead of the Sales Navigator version.

How to fix it

Connect first, then message

Use the LinkedIn Auto Connect to send connection requests. Once accepted, the person becomes a 1st-degree connection and you'll be able to message them directly. Then relaunch the LinkedIn Message Sender with the same input.

Pre-screen your input list

Before launching, check that your input list contains mostly 1st-degree connections. Run the LinkedIn Profile Scraper on your list first - it returns each profile's connection degree, so you can filter to 1st-degree only before feeding the list into the LinkedIn Message Sender.

Use the right Phantom

If you're working inside Sales Navigator, switch to the Sales Navigator Message Sender. The regular LinkedIn Message Sender can't interact with Sales Navigator pages.

Consider LinkedIn Premium for InMail

A Premium plan gives you InMail credits to message 2nd and 3rd-degree connections. Save these credits for high-priority prospects since they're limited.

Frequently asked questions

Can I message someone without being connected?

Only if they have Open Profile enabled (a Premium feature on their end) or if you use InMail credits from your own Premium subscription. Otherwise, you need to connect first.

What's the difference between LinkedIn Message Sender and Sales Navigator Message Sender?

The LinkedIn Message Sender works on standard LinkedIn profiles. The Sales Navigator Message Sender works within the Sales Navigator interface. Using the wrong one for your context will trigger this error.

How do I check if someone has Open Profile enabled?

Visit their LinkedIn profile. If you see a "Message" button even though you're not connected, they likely have Open Profile enabled. There's no way to check this in bulk before launching.

Will the Phantom skip profiles it can't message?

Yes. The Phantom logs the error for that profile and continues processing the rest of your input list.

How many InMail credits do I get with Premium?

It depends on your plan. Check LinkedIn's InMail documentation for current details.
