If your Instagram Phantom returns a "No matches found" error, it means the Phantom couldn't find any posts that match both your selected location and hashtag. Instagram only displays the first 28 posts per location, so if your hashtag isn't used in those posts, there's nothing for the Phantom to find. Use a more specific location and fewer, more targeted hashtags.
Why you’re seeing this
This error means the Phantom couldn’t find any posts that match both your selected location and hashtag. It applies to Phantoms like the Instagram Multiple Hashtag Follower and Instagram Hashtag Search Export.
Common causes include:
- Instagram limitations - Instagram only shows the first 28 posts per location. If your hashtag isn't used in any of those 28, no matches will be found. This is the most common cause.
- Low hashtag activity - The hashtag isn’t used often or doesn’t appear in recent posts from that location.
- Broad location - Using large areas like entire countries or major cities reduces the chance of overlapping posts in the 28-post window.
- Too many hashtags - The Phantom checks hashtags in pairs (combining two hashtags at a time to find posts that match both), so the more hashtags you add, the more combinations it needs to check and the higher the chance of finding no overlap.
- Incorrect input format - If your location and hashtags aren’t formatted correctly, the Phantom can’t interpret them.
How to fix it
Use a more specific location
Choose a smaller or more defined area instead of a country or large city. The narrower the location, the more likely the 28 visible posts will include your target hashtag.
Example: Use "Brooklyn" instead of "New York City."
Reduce the number of hashtags
Fewer tags help focus results and reduce mismatches. Since the Phantom checks hashtags in pairs, having fewer hashtags means fewer combinations to test and a better chance of finding matching posts.
Example: Try 2–3 targeted hashtags instead of 10 broad ones.
Check hashtag activity
Search for your hashtag directly on Instagram to make sure it's actively used in your target location. If it's rarely used, try a more popular variation. Instagram's available posts change over time, so if you just posted new content, wait a while and try again.
Correct your input format
Enter your inputs as location first, then hashtag(s), separated by a "+".
Example: Los Angeles + #summer
Frequently asked questions
Why does Instagram only show 28 posts per location?
This is an Instagram platform limit. Location pages display a fixed number of recent/top posts, and the Phantom can only process what's visible. There's no way to access older posts beyond that window.
What does "checks hashtags in pairs" mean?
When you provide multiple hashtags, the Phantom doesn't check each one individually, it combines them in pairs to find posts that match both hashtags at the same location. For example, with hashtags #summer, #beach, and #travel, it would check #summer + #beach, #summer + #travel, and #beach + #travel separately.
Can I search by hashtag without a location?
It depends on the Phantom. The Instagram Hashtag Search Export can search by hashtag alone, but the Instagram Multiple Hashtag Follower requires both a location and hashtag as input.
How often does Instagram refresh location-based posts?
The posts shown on a location page change as new content is posted and older content drops off. There's no fixed refresh interval, it depends on how actively people post at that location.
Will the Phantom retry if new posts appear later?
Not within the same run. But if the Phantom is scheduled to run repeatedly, the next launch will check the current state of the location page, which may include new matching posts.
Does this error count against my execution time?
Yes. The Phantom still spends time loading the location page and checking for matches before returning the error.
