To connect Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, Reddit, or Slack to PhantomBuster, the fastest method is using the PhantomBuster browser extension, it detects your session automatically. You can also connect manually by copying the platform's session cookie from your browser's Developer Tools. This guide covers both methods for connecting your own account or someone else's, plus tips for managing multiple accounts from one workspace.
Connect your own social media account
You can connect your account in two ways:
Option 1: Connect automatically using the browser extension (recommended)
This is the easiest method. PhantomBuster will detect your session automatically, so there's no need to copy anything manually.
→ To install the extension and connect your session, follow the steps in our detailed extension guide.
It covers:
- Supported browsers and install links
- How session detection works
- What the extension can do on LinkedIn (lead capture, CRM export, etc.)
Once installed, the extension works silently in the background. As long as you're logged into your social media platform in that browser, your session stays active and PhantomBuster can keep automations running smoothly.
Option 2: Connect manually using a session cookie
Use this method if:
- You're on an unsupported browser (like Safari).
- The extension isn't available or doesn't work in your setup
- You're connecting someone else's account (detailed in the next section).
Steps to connect manually:
- Open a new window and log into your targeted social media account.
-
Open Developer Tools: Right-click and select Inspect.
- From the Developer Tools panel, select Application.
- Go to Storage > Cookies dropdown > Cookies and find the relevant cookie:
- Facebook: cuser and xs
- Instagram: sessionid
- Reddit: reddit_session
- Slack: d
-
X/Twitter: auth_token
- Copy the value and paste it into the Connect to [Platform] step in your Phantom setup.
- Save and complete the setup to launch your Phantom.
Don't log out of the platform before closing the private window. Logging out will invalidate the session cookie and break the connection.
Connect someone else's social media account
If you want to automate from someone else's social media account (e.g. client or teammate), you don't need to give them access to your workspace. You just need their session data. There are two ways to connect these accounts:
Option 1: Connect with the extension and someone else's social media account in a private window
You can connect someone else's account using the PhantomBuster browser extension, even if they don't have a PhantomBuster login.
Before you start:
→ If you haven't already, follow this setup guide to install the extension and enable it in private windows (Chrome or Firefox).
→ Make sure the extension is installed and allowed in private windows:
-
Enable the extension in private more (one-time setup):
- Chrome: Go to Settings → Extensions → PhantomBuster → Details → Enable "Allow in Incognito."
- Firefox: Go to Settings → Extensions & Themes → PhantomBuster → Manage → Enable "Run in Private Windows."
Steps to connect someone else's account with the extension:
- Have the person log into their social media account in a new private window (or use their credentials if they've shared them with you) using a supported browser.
-
Connect the person's session in PhantomBuster:
- In another window, go to your PhantomBuster workspace.
- From your Solutions page, open the Phantom you want to use and click Use now.
- When you reach the Connect to [Platform] step, the extension will automatically detect the person's active session from the private window.
-
Confirm the person's session:
Once detected, confirm the session when prompted. Their account is now securely connected. - Close the private window without logging out to keep the session active.
Option 2: Connect with someone else's session cookie
If the extension isn't an option, the person can manually send you their session cookie.
Steps to connect someone else's account manually:
Ask the person to:
- Have the person log into their social media account (or use their credentials if they've shared them with you).
-
Open Developer Tools: Right-click and select Inspect.
-
From the Developer Tools panel, select Application.
- Go to Storage > Cookies dropdown > Cookies and find the relevant cookie:
- Facebook: cuser and xs
- Instagram: sessionid
- Reddit: reddit_session
- Slack: d
-
X/Twitter: auth_token
- Copy the value and share the cookie value with you securely.
- In your PhantomBuster workspace, go to the Phantom's Connect to [Platform] step and paste the cookie.
- Save and complete the setup to launch your Phantom.
Make sure they don't log out before closing the window, or the cookie will expire.
Best practices for managing multiple social media account
You can connect and automate from as many social media accounts as needed. To stay organized:
1. Use one Phantom per account
Duplicate your Phantom and assign a different session to each.
- In your Dashboard, click the 3-dot menu on a Phantom card and select Duplicate.
- Connect each copy to a different account.
2. Use private windows for setup
Avoid session conflicts by opening a new incognito/private window for each connection.
3. Rename and group Phantoms
-
Label each Phantom clearly (e.g. "X – Client A").
-
Group them by campaign or platform to simplify tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Which session cookie do I need for each platform?
Each platform uses a different cookie name: Instagram uses "sessionid", Facebook uses "c_user" and "xs", X/Twitter uses "auth_token", Reddit uses "reddit_session", and Slack uses "d". You can find these in your browser's Developer Tools under Application > Storage > Cookies.
Can I connect someone else's account without giving them access to my workspace?
Yes. You only need their session cookie or their active session in a private browser window. They don't need a PhantomBuster login. Ask them to either share their session cookie securely, or log in on your computer in a private window so the extension can detect their session.
Why did my session expire after connecting?
Session cookies expire when someone logs out of the platform, clears their browser cookies, or stays inactive for too long. Make sure the account owner doesn't log out after you've captured the session. If the session breaks, you'll need to reconnect using a fresh cookie or a new extension detection.
Can I run automations on multiple social media accounts from the same Workspace?
Yes. Duplicate your Phantom and assign a different session cookie to each copy. Rename and group them by client or platform on your Dashboard to stay organized. Each connected account runs independently.
Do I need the browser extension or can I always use the manual method?
Both methods work. The extension is faster and recommended because it detects your session automatically. The manual method (copying cookies from Developer Tools) is useful when the extension isn't available, you're on Safari, or you're connecting someone else's account remotely.
