The "Can't connect through this proxy" error means your Phantom couldn't establish a connection through the proxy you selected, usually because the proxy credentials are wrong, the proxy service is down, the location doesn't match your region, or a VPN is interfering. To fix it: verify your proxy configuration, test the proxy from your own computer to confirm it works outside PhantomBuster, match your proxy setup to the platform you're automating (Facebook and Google benefit from proxies; LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and Instagram usually don't need them), and disable any active VPN.

If you're using a proxy to fix a Facebook account lock, see How to Fix Facebook and Instagram Account Verification Errors for Facebook-specific proxy guidance.

Why you're seeing this

This error means the Phantom couldn't establish a connection through the proxy you selected. Without a valid proxy connection, it can't reach the platform or page it needs.

It usually happens because:

  • The proxy location doesn't match your actual region or the platform's requirements.
  • Proxy credentials (address, port, username, password) are incorrect or outdated.
  • The proxy service is temporarily down or incompatible with the platform.
  • VPNs or other network settings are interfering with the connection.

How to fix it

Verify your proxy configuration

If you're using PhantomBuster's built-in proxy:

Make sure it's selected in your Phantom's setup. For full details, see Use a Proxy to Fix Login Issues or Get Location-based Results.

If you're using an external proxy:

  • Double-check the proxy address, port, username, and password.
  • Select a proxy location close to your real region whenever possible.

Test the proxy on your computer

Configure your system to use the proxy and try opening a website in your browser. If the site doesn't load, the issue is with the proxy provider, not PhantomBuster.

On Mac:

  1. Go to System Settings.

  2. Search for Proxies, select your active network and click on Proxies.

  4. Enter your proxy server address, port number and login details.

  5. Click OK to save your changes and try accessing a website.

On Windows:

  1. Open Proxy Settings from the taskbar.

  4. Click Sign In and test connectivity in a browser.

Match your setup to the platform

Facebook and Google:

  • Ensure your session cookies are valid.
  • Use a proxy in the same region as your login location.
  • Temporarily disable the proxy to confirm it's the issue.

LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Instagram, and other platforms:

  • Proxies are not required and often cause problems.
  • Try disabling the proxy completely.

Check for VPN conflicts:

  • VPNs can override proxy settings or change your IP address.
  • Disable your VPN and test again with only the proxy enabled.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a proxy for my Phantom?

Usually no. LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and Instagram Phantoms typically work better without a proxy. Facebook and Google Phantoms are more IP-sensitive and often benefit from a proxy that matches your login location.

What's the difference between PhantomBuster's built-in proxy and an external one?

PhantomBuster's built-in proxy is managed for you, just select it in your setup. An external proxy requires you to provide the address, port, and credentials from a third-party provider. External proxies give you more location control but require manual maintenance.

How do I test whether my proxy is working?

Configure your computer's system settings to use the proxy, then open a website in your browser. If the site doesn't load, the problem is with the proxy provider, not PhantomBuster.

Can a VPN cause this error?

Yes. VPNs can override your proxy settings or change your IP address in ways that break the connection. Disable your VPN and test again with only the proxy enabled.

Should I use a proxy for LinkedIn Phantoms?

Generally no. Proxies often cause more problems than they solve on LinkedIn. Try disabling the proxy completely and running your Phantom without one.

Where do I find my proxy credentials?

Your external proxy provider supplies the address, port, username, and password when you subscribe. PhantomBuster doesn't store or generate these credentials for external proxies.
