Before you start
- This Phantom works with one group at a time.
- Awareness of LinkedIn’s safety limits:
- To protect your LinkedIn account, keep messaging activity moderate across the week:
- Up to 80 messages per week for standard LinkedIn accounts.
- Up to 150 messages per week for Sales Navigator accounts.
- To protect your LinkedIn account, keep messaging activity moderate across the week:
Step 1: Connect your LinkedIn account
To let the Phantom act on your behalf:
- Install the PhantomBuster browser extension and connect your LinkedIn session in one click.
- If you’re not using Chrome or Firefox, you can retrieve your session cookie manually (see our cookie guide).
Check your browser user agent
Make sure your browser is up to date before connecting your account.
→ If your Chrome or Firefox version is outdated, your session cookie may expire much more quickly, and you’ll need to reconnect often.
Step 2: Provide the group URL and write your message
-
Group URL:
- Paste the URL of the LinkedIn group you want to message members of.
- Only one group URL can be processed per run.
-
Enter your message:
- Write your message in the “Your message” field (up to 8,000 characters).
Watch the character counter in the bottom-right corner of the message box to track your usage. This helps you stay within limits and avoid your message being cut off. Keep in mind that placeholder tags also count toward the limit, so leave room for both the tag itself and the replaced text.
-
Attach files (optional)
Add documents or images to your message:
- Maximum combined file size = 20 MB.
- File attachments can only be sent to 1st-degree connections. Attachments included in messages to 2nd or 3rd-degree connections won't be delivered.
When writing your LinkedIn connection or follow-up messages, keep in mind:
-
Placeholder tags:
- All available tags appear at the bottom of the message box.
- Click on a tag to insert it, or use the + icon to see the full list.
-
Formatting restrictions:
- Emojis are not supported.
- Hyperlinks are not supported: any pasted link will appear as plain text.
Step 3: Configure message sending settings
Control how many members to contact per group and per launch:
-
Number of members to message per group:
- Default = all available members up to LinkedIn’s limit: LinkedIn only displays the most recent 2,500 members of a group.
- Enter a smaller number if you want to message only part of the group.
-
Number of messages to send per launch:
- Controls how many members are messaged each time the Phantom runs.
- Example: If you set this to 20 and your group has 200 members, the Phantom will take 10 launches to cover them all.
Step 4: Select launch frequency
Choose how often the Phantom should run:
- Launch manually: Start the Phantom yourself whenever you need.
- Launch once at a specific time: schedule a one-time run at a set date and time.
- Launch repeatedly: schedule regular runs (e.g. once per day, several times during working hours).
- Launch after another Phantom: chain automations together so this Phantom starts right after another finishes.
- Advanced scheduling: customize the exact minutes, hours, days, or months when the Phantom should run.
→ For a complete walkthrough of scheduling options, see our guide to scheduling Phantoms automatically.
Step 5 (Optional): Advanced settings
Advanced settings are available if you want to fine-tune how your Phantom runs, but by default they’re already optimized for most use cases.
We recommend leaving them as they are unless a guide specifically instructs you to change something.
→ For a detailed overview of all advanced options (like execution limits, retries, email notifications, proxies, webhooks, and file management), see our Advanced settings guide.
Launch and results
When you’re ready:
- Click Launch to start your Phantom.
- Once it finishes, open the Results tab in the Phantom console to see which group members were contacted.
- Download your results as a CSV or JSON file, or view them as a dynamic list on the LinkedIn Leads page.
→ To learn how to export your data to Google Sheets, integrate with other tools, or reuse it in more automations, check our Access and Export your Phantom Results guide.
Export and input limits on the Free plan
If you’re on the Free plan or Free trial, some features are limited:
- CSV exports include only the first 10 rows of results.
- CSV download links (for dynamic viewing in Google Sheets or integrations) are not available.
- JSON exports are not available.
- CSV upload as an input method is not supported.
To unlock all features, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan.

Tips and troubleshooting
Common pitfalls
- Using the wrong input → this Phantom only accepts LinkedIn group URLs.
- Forgetting LinkedIn’s 2,500-member cap → older members won’t appear in results.
- Exceeding safe weekly messaging volumes → sending too many messages in a short period can lead to warnings, temporary restrictions, or faster session expiration.
- Attaching files larger than 20 MB.
- Attaching files when messaging 2nd or 3rd-degree connections → File attachments are only supported for 1st-degree connections. Remove any attachments before messaging members you're not yet connected with.
- Trying to message group members who are not 1st-degree connections or Open profiles → these members will appear in the logs with the message: “Can't message this profile on LinkedIn.” The Phantom will skip them and continue to the next member.
- Workaround: Use LinkedIn Group Members Export to collect the profiles first, then run LinkedIn Outreach to connect with them. Once they accept your connection request, you can follow up with a message.

Suggested automations
Combine with other Phantoms to build campaigns:
-
LinkedIn Outreach → send personalized connection requests or messages, all from one dashboard.
- Pair it with an AI Phantom (like AI LinkedIn Message Writer) to generate tailored outreach before sending.
- LinkedIn Auto Liker or Auto Commenter → engage with members’ posts to build visibility and warm up before sending a direct message.
