PhantomBuster can find verified professional email addresses for your leads using built-in email discovery or third-party providers like Hunter.io, Dropcontact.io, and Snov.io. Emails are discovered by matching a person's full name and company domain against provider databases. Not every lead will return a result. Common reasons include no match in the provider's database, incomplete input data, out-of-network LinkedIn profiles, or exhausted monthly credits. To improve match rates, clean your input data, use your own provider API key, and target leads with complete company info.
What is email discovery
Email discovery tools help you find and verify professional email addresses using publicly available and inferred data. They're used in sales, marketing, and outreach to connect with leads or business contacts.
These tools typically rely on a person's full name and company domain to generate likely email addresses, then run verification checks to confirm if those emails are valid and deliverable.
What "verified" means
A verified email address has passed technical checks: the domain exists, the format is valid, and it matches common company email patterns. However, verified does not guarantee 100% delivery. Soft bounces can still occur, for example if an inbox is full or there's a temporary server issue.
How PhantomBuster integrates email discovery
Some Phantoms include a built-in Email discovery step that automates this process for you. PhantomBuster uses a waterfall enrichment approach: if the first method doesn't return an email, it automatically tries an alternative method to maximise your chances of finding a result.
Here's how it works:
- The Phantom sends the person's full name and company domain to the email discovery service.
- The service attempts to find and verify a valid professional email address.
- The result, if found, is added to your Phantom's results file.

Set up email discovery in your Phantom
When setting up a Phantom that supports email discovery as an optional step, like the LinkedIn Profile Scraper, you'll see an Email discovery step in the setup, this is where you can choose which provider to use.
From the dropdown, you can select:
- None: Skip email discovery for this run.
- PhantomBuster: Use your built-in monthly credits (included with your plan).
- Hunter.io: Use your own Hunter.io account by entering your API key.
- Dropcontact.io: Use your own Dropcontact.io account by entering your API key.
- Snov.io: Use your own Snov.io account by entering your API key.
If you choose one of your own providers, the Phantom will use your available credits from that service before using any PhantomBuster credits. This can help improve match rates and manage your monthly allocation.
How long email discovery takes
Email discovery usually takes about one minute per batch of profiles, depending on:
- The automation you're running
- How many leads are being processed
- The provider you selected
For automation-specific timing and setup details, we recommend checking the tutorial page of the automation you're using.
→ Each tutorial includes: examples, estimated execution time, and screenshots tailored to that specific automation.
Where to find the email discovery results
Once your Phantom has finished running, you can download your results from its Results tab.
- If an email was successfully discovered, it will appear in the professional email column of the results file.
- If no email appears for a lead, it means the provider couldn't return a verified result for that person.
Email discovery credits and quotas
Each PhantomBuster plan includes a limited number of Email Discovery credits, which reset monthly. These credits represent how many discovery attempts you can make.
You can track remaining credits in your workspace settings.
When you run out of credits
The Phantom will still run and return any other lead data, but the email column will remain empty. You'll also see an error message such as "No email discovery credits left".
Wait until your credits reset on the date shown in your Resources page before running email discovery again.
Why some emails might be missing
Even when your input includes names and company domains, results may vary. Here's why:
- No match found in the provider's database.
- Incorrect or inconsistent input data (e.g. typos in names or companies).
- Domain mismatch: Company info doesn't lead to a valid email domain.
- Soft bounces even after a successful match (server-side issues).
- Quota limits: You've reached your email discovery cap for the day/month.
- The LinkedIn profile is out of your network: In this case, essential data like company information may be hidden, which prevents email discovery from returning a result.
This is expected behavior and doesn't mean your Phantom is broken.
How to improve your email discovery results
To increase your chances of getting verified professional emails:
-
Use your own Hunter or Snov account
Switch to your own provider by entering your API key in the Email discovery step (see above). This may improve accuracy and bypass credit limitations depending on your email lookup plan. -
Clean your input data
Make sure names and company names are consistent and correctly formatted.
Avoid line breaks, emojis, and unnecessary special characters. -
Target higher-quality lead sources
Leads with complete company and name data (e.g. LinkedIn profiles) tend to yield better results than scraped or aggregated lists with missing fields.
Important note on account safety and daily limits
Processing fewer profiles per day does not improve email match rates, but it can reduce the risk of LinkedIn restrictions when running Phantoms that visit or interact with profiles.
As a safety measure, we recommend processing about half of the Phantom's default daily limit.
For example: if the LinkedIn Profile Visitor recommends 80 profiles/day, process 40 instead to improve accuracy and reduce risk of account restrictions.

Frequently asked questions
Why are some emails missing from my PhantomBuster results?
Email discovery relies on matching a person's name and company domain against provider databases. Emails may be missing if there's no match in the database, the input data has typos or inconsistencies, the LinkedIn profile is out of your network (hiding company info), or you've run out of monthly credits.
How do I choose an email discovery provider in PhantomBuster?
During your Phantom's setup, go to the Email discovery step and select from the dropdown: PhantomBuster (built-in credits), Hunter.io, Dropcontact.io, Snov.io, or a combination. For third-party providers, you'll need to enter your own API key.
What happens when I run out of email discovery credits?
Your Phantom will still run and return other lead data, but the email column will remain empty. You'll see an error message like "No email discovery credits left." Wait until your credits reset on the date shown in your Resources page.
Does processing fewer profiles per day improve email match rates?
No. Processing fewer profiles doesn't improve email results, but it does reduce the risk of LinkedIn restrictions. As a safety measure, process about half of the Phantom's default daily limit.
